Team personnel enter a disaster zone in the aftermath of a storm to offer spiritual and emotional guidance to storm survivors.

The team is deployed at the request of the Conference Disaster Response Coordinator to congregations and small communities who have been affected by a disaster (tornado, hurricane, etc.) They provide spiritual and emotional care following disasters and help disaster survivors connect with their personal and community spiritual, emotional, and basic life resources.

The team is composed of clergy or laity volunteers who have a gift for listening and are trained in crisis intervention.

Qualifications for Spiritual Response Team member certification:
1. UMCOR Early Response Team training
2. UMCOR Basic CARE Team training
3. TACCOR CARE Team Orientation
4. American Red Cross “Psychological First Aid” course or its equivalent
5. Background and reference check
6. Conference and CARE Team Safe Sanctuary Training
7. Letter of endorsement from Texas Annual Conference UM Pastor

Other training recommended but not required:
1. Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) training
2. Stephens Ministry training
3. UMCOR training in Information and Referral work
